It’s the temperament of her subjects that gives photographer Katherine Sanderson such a buzz.
“I love shooting flowers. They are such well-behaved models – patient, uncomplaining beauties without egos… and expressive from their first bud to the last clinging petal.”
This month’s winner captures the very feel of each flower: waxy, stiff petals; crackling leaves, soft, billowing flowerheads. Sanderson has been shooting since 2001, and sees the initial shot as a starting point for editing software such as Photoshop to “bring out a feeling, a memory, a dream.”
“Photography has taught me to see visual poetry all around me – a tentative stretch of green tendril across a rusted railroad bridge, the interlacing lattice of winter branches making stained glass patterns against the sky, the seductive opulence of a dahlia.”
