Sneak a leek

These glorious leeks, with a lovely long white shaft, were snapped at the superb Ockley farm shop in Surrey. If you’re planning for an early harvest of leeks in August or September of this year, you’ll need to sow seeds in February, so get ordering!

Sow indoors in a warm room (on window sill and just above a radiator is a perfect mix), and don’t plant out until you have hardened off the plants. You’ll need to have worked in a good amount of compost into the soil, and leave about 9in between each plant.

Fennel and Fern recommends ‘Carlton F1’ and ‘King Richard’ as early leek cultivars.
