Flowers and showers
We’ve had rather generous weather lately: warm, sunny days, and showers overnight. And while this is great news for most of your garden, there are a few plants which need extra attention at the moment.
If your first or second early potatoes are flowering, you should make sure they are having a good daily drink of water, and a nice cup of comfrey tea once a week to get those tubers into shape. Just make sure you don’t drown them, as too much water can encourage diseases such as blight.
Our peas are in flower and pushing out more and more pods every day. Holding back from overwatering means the plant does not put all its energy into leafy growth. But now the flowers are here, the peas are thirsty. A good watering in the morning and evening will mean the seeds swell inside their pods and taste incredible when you gobble them all up.
Make sure you aren’t being wasteful when you water your veg. Install a water butt to collect as much as you can, and re-use water which you have boiled veg with (just leave it to cool completely first). And mulch, if you haven’t done already, as this traps moisture in the soil.
