We’ve just picked our first peas from the balcony. I know most people like to boil their peas for a few minutes before eating them, but I prefer them raw. You get much more of the pea flavour that way, and a good crunchy texture as well.
These are ‘Ambassador’ peas, and after we shelled them, we ate them with a bunch of salad, also gathered from the garden. Cut and come again salads are one of the best things about growing your own veg, and they can save you a ton of money as well
Over the past few weeks, I have been sowing cut and come again salad leaves regualrly in different parts of the veg plot and balcony. We’ve sown rocket, chard, lettuce ‘red salad bowl’, nasturtiums, and a mixed leaf salad which came with Gardens Illustrated last year. Because I am quite a guzzler of salad leaves, I like to sow the next batch as soon as the first have germinated, thus ensuring a steady supply. But if you’re less prone to endlessly munching leaves, you can just sow every two weeks.
