Every evening after work, Toby and I inspect the garden. This really is the loveliest part of the day, especially if work has been a little bit rotten for either of us. Everything is so thoughtful by six o’clock, and there’s always something new, or which we haven’t noticed before. This evening it was the cherries, dangling like plastic beads over our fence. This year was a fantastic year for blossom, and it looks like a fantastic year for cherries as well. It is unlikely we’ll get to harvest many of these little beads, though, as a couple of plump woodpigeons have already set up camp in the upper branches like women waiting outside a red carpet event.
There are all sorts of marvellous things to see in our garden at the moment, and I thought I’d share just a few. I crept up on a few plants when they weren’t looking, and caught some rather intimate shots.
This last, of a Crocosmia Lucifer’s ribcage flowerbuds, is my favourite. Toby keeps running his fingers through the spiky little buds. He has never seen a Crocosmia in flower before, he tells me. I can’t wait to introduce him to the bright flame-like flowers when they burst open. There are still so many suprises ahead.
