Helleborus niger likes to be known as the Christmas Rose. But if it were a Christmas present, it would be one that arrives a few weeks after the event, a little apologetic and flustered. It prefers to flower from mid-January rather than arrive on Christmas Day. Just as even late presents are lovely and kind and generous, the Christmas Rose is incredibly welcome at this time of year, its delicate little heads lighting up shady corners of the garden.
It will soon self-seed itself all over your garden, and you’ll find yourself adoring these little modest flowers. It doesn’t have all the finery of its later-flowering cousin, Helleborus orientalis, but it does a marvellous job at cheering up the garden when everything else has collapsed in a grumpy heap.
