The garden from scratch is coming along swimmingly these days. But as we’re moving house in August, I can’t help feeling a little bit sad when I walk around the beds, and duck past the six-foot kale plant. Though I am young and silly, I’m not silly enough to think a garden is something to worship, or a house something to complete you. But I will be sad to leave, especially as everything is looking so marvellous.
The borders are packed full, with a cloud of self-sown forget-me-nots, and the kale (did I mention the kale before? I don’t believe I did) dominates the whole plot. ‘Queen of the Night’ tulips are still flourishing as the alliums start to unzip. Even our shed is well-dressed at the moment, encrusted with a pink Clematis montana.
There’s the promise of more, as well. Self-sown foxgloves are forming grey-green spires, and the Bristol onions are limbering up for the hilarious loop-the-loop journey they make to flowering. Even though I harvest bundles of comfrey leaves every weekend for mulches, brews and tomato pots, the plants are huge and ready to flower. And the roses are in bud.
Oh, yes, I am in love with this little garden of mine and its soft green leaves and baby fruits. But there are plenty more adventures to come.

Really, really pretty. It will be hard to part ways, I’m sure…
