The meadow cranesbill (Geranium pratense) is one of the very best summer flowers. It looks fabulous close up, but also has that effect of holding a whole border together. Planting a cranesbill is bit like a wrapping a really marvellous belt around a slightly messy dress: your borders will look ever so stylish for it.
One of the best things about cranesbills is that they are so enthusiastic when it comes to flowering. This isn’t a namby-pamby plant: when it decides to flower, it really does, with heaps of blooms all over its lovely soft mound of foliage. Plant in drifts, in fact, plant as many as you can.
