The first peas in the garden are finally ready, and I’m so excited. They’re rather late this year as the weather has been so terribly slow to perk up.
These are ‘Ambassador‘ peas, which can be grown as a second early or a maincrop. They’re smooth-seeded, which means they are hardier than wrinkled peas, such as the ‘Victorian Colossal Climbing‘ peas that are just limbering up to produce their first pods.
Once I get my first taste of garden peas, seconds after picking, I’m longing for more, and more and more. I can’t stop picking the pods. As soon as I can feel their little outlines pushing against the pods, I pick them to catch the sweetest taste. And the more I pick, the more the plants push out more pods. Which is a perfect deal.
We picked our first peas early this morning and to our delight the pods were full of fat peas (and no pests). The sun has really matured them quickly over the past days.
