My mangetout really is marvellous this year. I always grow ‘Oregon Giant’, because it has the most super-duper juicy taste, and also stays soft and munchable even when you leave it to grow as big as this pod.
This summer’s weather has stressed my shelling peas into a miserable sulk, but the mangetout plants are still green, leafy and cropping fabulously. I always slip a few pods into my packed lunch when I’m at work, so that I can nibble them raw at my desk, or I steam them for a couple of minutes before wolfing them down.
The thing about all peas is the more you fiddle with them, the less tasty they become. Save for a couple of penniless weeks as a student when I lived off curried pea soup, I’ve never understood why you’d bother doing anything other than cram them into your mouth, as fresh and unfettered as possible.
