Abutilon is a dead classy plant. Its flowers come in lovely rarefied vintage-dress colours, and are themselves the shape of a fabulous New Look gown (that’s the Dior New Look, not the one that sells cheap white trousers).
This is ‘Souvenir de Bonne’, which incidentally is one of the few variegated plants that I really like. Its gorgeous peachy-orange flowers look fabulous against the cream-edged leaves.
Abutilons really look best mixed in with other luscious big-leaved, slightly exotic-looking plants. If you’re reading F&F, you’re probably not a big fan of bedding plants, but don’t plant these perennials in some hideous bedding scheme where their sweet little beauty will be entirely lost.
