Quite frankly, if you don’t love Brugmansia, then you’re a bit of an idiot. Let’s consider why. It has enormous, beautifully-coloured wizard hat flowers. It has lush, fat tropical leaves. It can grow to a big old size, or it can stay a manageable size if you grow it in a container. Oh yes, and it likes to grow in a container. Persuaded?
Yes, yes, I know it doesn’t like standing outside in cold winters. But who does? And covering the plant in warm, cosy fleece when the cold weather approaches, and making sure you plant it in a warm, sheltered spot isn’t really a chore. Neither is moving the container indoors altogether, just to be sure. I would go to far more extreme lengths to have this gorgeous shrub in my garden.
If you are growing your brugmansia in a container, make sure it never dries out. And give it a friendly light prune in October to encourage lovely bushy growth and a splendid display of flowers.
