I remember the first time I met a flowering dogwood. I didn’t really believe its perfect plasticky flowers were real. They were so neat, so sharply patterned and so profuse. This dogwood, Cornus florida rubra, is truly my favourite fake-looking flowering tree. plant it right slap-bang in the middle of your garden, as a focal point, and insist that anyone visiting in late March and April spends at least an hour gazing at it.
