Growing apricots is a bit of a risky business in this country. But if you’ve got the right conditions, then any extra tinkering and hard work is worth it to bite into a fresh, sun-warmed orange fruit.
It is rather smart to grow an apricot up against a sunny wall in the most sheltered part of your garden. The beauty of a wall is that it takes in heat during the day and then releases it slowly overnight, thus keeping the tree warm and cosy. And though training the tree as a fan means fewer fruit, it also means that the fruit get sun and attention and love.
Prune an apricot during the growing season, when the sap is rising. Follow a basic fan shape, and cut out any branches that are pointing in the wrong direction.
In the winter, protect from frost and peach leaf curl with either a frame covered in fleece, or a bracken screen. And in the summer, make sure you continue to water the tree well to keep it from drying out at the base of the wall.
