I always have my children in mind when I plan my vegetable garden. I want to grow what they like to eat so they can get excited when they see the vegetable plants growing. When it’s time to harvest, their anticipation of “what we’re going to get” is palpable!
When I was choosing seeds and plants to review from Victoriana Nursery late last year, I wanted to try potatoes. I grew some last year but the yield was poor. I hoped I would be luckier this year with their Forest Gold tubers, a variety derived from International Kidney. I received some good advice on chitting the tubers from a seasoned allotment holder. My tubers arrived with white ‘chits’ on them but I knocked them off and started them again on a well-lit windowsill.
Sitting, chitting
After planting and much subsequent earthing up, the green foliage eventually flowered and then started to die back. Time for a tentative dig to see what we had!
Found one!
The potatoes are large, with very thin skins (and they are plentiful!). We tried boiling them but they were a bit ‘solid’ so we next fried some for chips (Victoriana suggest these potatoes are best baked, fried, sautéed, or mashed). When fried they held their shape and were very tasty. There are many more potatoes still to dig, so we’ll be trying the other ways to cook them with much enthusiasm.
