I’ve been writing a lot about my plan to grow some cutting flowers in Exeter, where I live in my little house with my first real big garden. As I mentioned before, I always feel a bit empty if I don’t have flowers in every room of the house, and normally I order bouquets in from florists in Devon. But I fancy doing some of my own floristry now that I’ve got a plot of my own, mainly because there are some cut flowers that are pretty tricky to get hold of. I visited some florists in Bristol this weekend, and made a list of all the plants they commonly have. I’m going to grow some different types to keep my house looking fun and perky. Here are my ideas:
Giant himalayan lilies. Yes I know they take years before they flower, but if you cut the enormous 8ft flowering spikes and place them in equally enormous vases, you are actually saving the bulb the energy of flowering, thus giving it another shot in following years.
Grape hyacinths. How cute will these look in a line of teeny tiny bud vases?
Forsythia. I spray painted some forsythia prunings white one year and left them in a vase with some holly over Christmas. Of course, I’d forgotten that the branches were still alive, and within a week they had burst into bright flower in the warm house. I am lucky enough to have a white forsythia, so I’ll be spraying the branches gold and leaving them to look stunning in my dining room on Christmas day.
