When researching new plants for my soon-to-be-redesigned back garden I stumbled upon a seriously beautiful plant that is destined to be added to my plant wish list – Paris japonica.
Initially I was looking for a plant that would hold its own under a tree in partial shade. I had thoughts of planting a large block of a particular evergreen plant or similarly woodland plants and then I stumbled upon this. As a woodland plant Paris japonica fitted the bill perfectly and it would also be well suited to my moisture retentive, hummus rich soil. It has large architectural leaves and beautiful white flowers, yet despite its uncomplicated appearance it still adds a lot of texture and interest to the garden. After flowering, Paris will also produce a purple berry, which is believed to be edible, and this had me intrigued as it may also prove to be functional as well as beautiful, although I’d imagine any yield would be very small.
I’m yet to decide on my planting plan but I can always dream of Paris.
Do you have any experience of growing Paris japonica?
