Oh, what would I give for January to be over! Seriously, this month is as miserable as the day is long. The dark evenings, the dark mornings, the dark afternoons and the cold, cold soil are making me sulky. I have all these plans for a summer garden full of flowers, and yet all I can see is mud, and that’s only in the short daylight hours.
At this time of year I retreat into my sofa, often with a large woollen throw, and hide away until the sun returns. For thirty-one days I make my own pretend world of seed catalogues, gazing at websites belonging to interflora florists (and wishing that anything I could grow would be perfect enough to be sent as flowers by post), plotting about all the beautiful pots I could buy, all the tables, all the birdhouses, and all the sweet little garden candles, envying other people’s gardens in magazines, and gleaning inspiration from other blogs, and drawing long and complex plans for my own garden.
Inspired by the F&F mad gardening resolutions, I’ve decided to draw up my own list of things I want to do once January is over.
1. Cut out all peat. Yes, that means buying plants from peat-free nurseries, which is going to mean I’m not going to get everything I want in my garden. Please F&F readers, please suggest some nurseries that have cut out peat products?
2. Grow enough fruit to share it with my neighbours, who I want to be friendly towards, rather than just scowling at them when they park on my bit of the grass verge.
3. Take more time to just relax in the garden.
Bet you can guess which resolution I’ll break first, huh?
Sam
I totally agree with you. Damn, its so cold! I can’t wait for January to get over too and welcome a bright, sunny morning.
