A few months ago I received a very exciting gift – this beautiful bird cafe from UMBRA.
When I opened the box my jaw hit the floor – it was certainly the most stylish birdfeeder I had ever seen. If garden birds hold award ceremonies for excellence and innovation in the design of their favourite restaurants (and I hold no evidence to say that they don’t), then this birdfeeder would definitely be shortlisted.
Sadly though, it would probably be pipped to the post by some other design that succeeds where this one fails – i.e. in actually functioning as a birdfeeder. Because the tray at the bottom where the food sits has no overhanging protection from above, the seeds go soggy and mucky as soon as it rains (unusual in Britain, I know, but it does happen).
We have managed to get round this problem by fixing an old record on the top of the roof, with the feeder string poking through the hole in the middle, but aesthetically this leaves something to be desired.
In conclusion, I can highly recommend this birdfeeder if you have somewhere sheltered you can hang it, or if you are prepared to add a roof to the design, or if you live in Egypt.
