I love the tipping point that comes about at this time of the year. From now on, it’s all systems go. There will be more flowers, more leaves, more crops and more hours in the day to enjoy them. The race has begun.
But for now, celebrating that spring is here is enough. That sudden transformation of the soil from winter grey to technicolour as the bulbs open is worth an hour of standing and staring at least.
In the vanilla sunlight of a late winter afternoon, the plants preen themselves.
The hellebores are here, but between them are more and more and more bulb shoots. And after that will come the first tendrils of the herbaceous plants, while above the leaves are stretching themselves and uncurling from their tight winter swaddling. It’s here folks. The race has begun.
Hellebores are great this year, but I sometimes think you need a mirror on a stick to view the nodding kinds properly, as there inner parts with their lovely markings are hidden from view – even for limbo dancers.

I agree Jon: they are too shy for their beauty.
