Lessons from the first batch of balcony strawberries.
We’ve finally harvested our first strawberry from the balcony this week. It was worth the rather long wait, although it would be nice to harvest more than two at a time.
The main problem is that I’ve put these in a railing planter, where they seem to be a little more stressed than they should be. And the breeze bangs them around a bit, which bruises them.
That doesn’t mean they don’t taste beautiful and juicy and sweet and unlike anything you could ever pick up in a shop. But it’s worth knowing as I’ll plant them on another bit of the balcony (or maybe if my plotting comes off, part of a garden in a new home) next year. The pineberry in the Herb Garden table, for instance, is doing a lot better.
