Garden grab
Apple blossom. Image by nblumhardt.
It’s at this time of year that we really start to thank our lucky stars for planting fruit in the garden. Fruit and nut blossom isn’t just magical: it also comes at a time when much of the veg patch is still rather bare. Those vegetables which are growing aren’t terribly tall, but blossom adds height in the potager, and that’s why anyone creating a hot plot really must add at least one of these fruits trees or shrubs to their plan.

Of course, the fruit that these beautiful plants produce is worth its weight in gold, not just for eating, but also for the beautiful colours it brings to the garden in late summer. So that’ll be the subject of another Hot Plot post, along with how to train fruit trees to look magnificent in your potager.

MAYBELLINE
Isn’t spring lovely?
I’m curious to learn when these blossom pix were snapped.
It seems so long ago for me.

Hi Maybelline,
As the credits show, these were taken by a number of photographers - click on the links to visit their flickr pages and see when the pics were snapped! Blossom just starting to fade here on the South coast of England.

These pictures are lovely. Nature can be so beautiful. We have a very old apple tree that blossoms wonderfully but never sets fruit. But she is far too pretty to be cut down for firewood - we look forward to every spring with her.
