HomeblogUrban gardening Thursday’s urban veg growing workshop was a lot of fun. It was great to natter for two hours about growing your own vegetables in whatever space you have, with whatever materials you have. For anyone who couldn’t make it, or for those who could and who want a reminder on some of the tips and techniques, here are a few things that we covered on the summer veg station: If you’re growing your own for the first time, start with salads. They are quick and easy to grow and they save a ton of money. Here are my top salad leaves. If you’re growing cordon or indeterminate tomatoes, you’ll need to pinch out the sideshoots to keep the plant growing upwards and focused on cropping. You can take cuttings from these to make new plants. There are thousands of great tomato varieties out there. Here’s a taste test I ran last year. And here’s a recipe for green tomato chutney, just in case you are hit by the dreaded blight. Comfrey is a star plant for organic gardeners. You can make a feed out of it, and it has tons of other uses in the garden. Here are just a few, along with growing instructions. The best way to deter slugs is to make a stinky garlic spray. Urban gardening often means being inventive, and here are some tips for saving space, and a factsheet on growing edibles on a balcony. For easy-to-read portable tips on growing edibles, read the Good Growing Guide. Debbie from Carrots and Kids will also be posting on the topics she covered on her herb station, so skip over there this week for more top tips. Reply Carolyn June 14, 2010 Hello Issy, Thanks for all the advice on Thursday - it was most enjoyable, plus it was lovely to meet you; as Roger, above, says, a very inspiring evening with lots of top tips although I can’t quite remember your tip about milk powder - do you add it to the soil around tomatoes? I’m now returning to the Veg Patch with renewed vigour! Thanks also for your comment on my blog! Carolyn x Reply Issy June 19, 2010 Hi Carolyn, nice to meet you last week!
