Rocking rocket

I love rocket flowers so much that I always sow more of the salad than I need so I can perk up my veg patch with drifts of those exquisite flowers. The inky black veins running over the cream petals remind me of dragonfly wings.

I’d grow rocket purely as an ornamental for these lovely little flowers, but one of the best things about rocket flowers is that they are edible. They have a mild peppery taste like the rest of the plant, and they make an utterly marvellous garnish for salads, or on spring omlettes. Leave some to form seed pods, and you’ll never have to buy a packet of salad seeds again.

Those rocket flowers, mixed with a little walnut oil, make a wonderful dressing for hot new potato salad - their gentle peppery flavour is an ideal complement to the subtle joy of the first new potatoes of the year!
