Here’s a clever little fence that I found at Wisley when I visited this week. it’s not really a fence, more of a hedge-that-looks-like-a-fence, as it is made of living willow stems, folded and bundled together.
It’s a marvellous idea as it means you can reveal beautiful spring flowers which would otherwise be hidden behind the willow stems, and the lovely golden-red stems are bright as a button and much more interesting than a dead miniature fence. I noticed that the gardeners have trimmed back the largest stems on the willows, but kept the thinnest and most pliable. How very clever.

Hmmm that looks delightful. I wonder if I could do that with our olives. They will also coppice if cut back viciously, but whether they would all be willing to stay down at knee-height??
