Erythrina crista-galli

The first time I saw this plant at my local botanical gardens I was almost certain that it was a greenhouse specimen that had been placed outdoors to help lift a summer display. To actually find out that it grows in that spot all year round was truly astounding as it exudes all the characteristics of a tropical shrub not suited to our climate. I’m quite privileged in that I live in a rather temperate area of Wales but I’m assured that Erythrina grows well along the south coast of England, parts of Ireland and other mild areas of the UK. It can withstand temperatures down to -5C but also grows well in containers making it a suitable candidate for bringing under cover to protect it over winter.
