
Quite often, the simplest designs are the very best. Take this border at Caversham Court in Reading. The designer hasn’t spent ages drawing up his or her plant list: in fact, there are only four plants in shot. Each one works against the other perfectly.

There’s the dark, neat box, which sets itself off against the airy-fairy bright blue forget-me-nots, which set themselves off against the fiery, tall tulips, which are a perfect foil for the even taller, solid and smart dark bay tree. Simples.


I agree especially where bulbs are concerned the simplest designs are often the most effective.
