HomeYour BlogsNet those cabbages F&F member Amelia White watches her cabbages romp away. I can’t even bring myself to post a picture a of what happened to my cabbages last year. Just imagine, please, so I can spare myself the pain. There were pigeons. There was a hot fortnight when I went on holiday to somewhere cold and rainy. And there was a large hungry slug. Needless to say, I wasn’t eating cabbage from late summer through to early spring. So I’ve done a few things differently this year. First, I netted my cabbages. Fool girl, my mother said, when she heard I hadn’t done this before. So I netted them, and the pigeons hate me as they have nothing to eat. I’ve also put little collars around the bottom of each plant smeared thickly with Vaseline, which deters slugs. And I’ve found an amazing seep hose which waters my plants even when I’m away. New visitors tell me I’m a good gardener. Oddly, I never tell them that my cabbage success only follows last year’s cabbage desolation… You can write your own blogpost for Fennel & Fern.
