Sweet pea memories

The faintest scent of Sweet Peas is enough to evoke happy childhood memories for me. When I was a young girl, my mum always planted an enormous display of these flowers in the garden. I loved the variety of colours and their heady scent, which filled our home in the summer. My sister and I were asked to cut a bunch for the house almost daily (mum always had a small jar spare for a little posy). I used to worry that we’d cut them and they would be gone, but of course, there were always more flowers a few days later.

Every year I try to grow a display to rival my mum’s. I’m always disappointed, the flowers never seem to give off enough scent. When I spotted Victoriana Nursery’s Old Spice Sweet Pea mix of heritage varieties I simply had to try them (they date back to Admiral Nelson’s time!). Their website says this mix has a very strong perfume too.

As I opened my back door this morning, I caught a scent I’ve been missing for many years. And like a young girl, I grabbed my scissors and cut a small posy for my home. I’m looking forward to cutting another posy later this week.
