HomeblogMy balcony oasis I’ve recently moved house, away from my old noisy flat with no garden or enough natural light to grow indoor vegetables to a new flat in a new town with a balcony. Having at least some outdoor space is quite a relief, not just because I can drink a cheeky glass of wine in the evening sun after a long day in London, but also because I can grow salad leaves, edible flowers and herbs right next to my kitchen. Lots of the other balconies in the development where we live have owners who do just that already, to a greater or lesser extent: But when we arrived, our balcony looked like this: Cue three hours on my hands and knees, scrubbing that disgusting algae from the bottom of the balcony. I don’t think the previous tenants spent very much time out here at all… Now that the balcony is clean, I’ve started to plant it up. I’ll be posting over the next few weeks about some of the stylish plants and containers that I’m using to turn this little perch into a gorgeous oasis. The balcony catches the sun in the morning and the evenings, which means that real heat-lovers like tomatoes and aubergines are out of the question as they’ll be rather miserable here. That’s not a problem, as I’m also taking on an allotment (more details on this soon), and I’d rather grow plants that need daily attention like salads and leafy veg here anyway. The good thing about a balcony (or any plot for that matter) that misses out on the heat of the midday and afternoon sun is that it is perfect for salad plants which would otherwise bolt. I’ll be able to grow spinach and full lettuces year round because of the part shade cast by the buildings around my balcony.
