HomeblogRhubarb delight The early rhubarb gets going at the allotment. The allotment is looking pretty bare at the moment: just the odd spike from a daffodil leaf, and the red, red stems of some of the hybrid and rare berries. But my ‘Timperley Early’ Rhubarb is cheering me up no end, bursting forward from their fat buds. They’re ever so early: the other rhubarbs are only just starting to think about putting out shoots. I can’t wait for that first taste of allotment rhubarb, just a few weeks from now. While it was quite tasty, there are only two of us to eat it and whenever I tried to give away the excess people either said they loathed it or that they grew some themselves! In the end, I dug the whole plant up and donated it to my old horticulture class at college. I did love watching it come up bright and cheery in spring though - and it looked impressive at full height, bigger than me (okay, I’m only five feet tall, but still…)!
