A lipstick red rhubarb. People are often surprised by how green rhubarb really is. Timperley Early, for instance, is as much pink and green as it is red. But if it’s really, really rich red rhubarb you’re looking for, you’ll struggle to find a better variety than ‘Red Champagne’. Just look at how red those stalks are. This rhubarb plant is from Crowders, and is just coming into its harvest period. Everything is much later than usual this year, but ‘Red Champagne’ is a relatively late variety anyway. If you’re planting a rhubarb patch, aim for a succession of varieties for the longest season possible, and for the most fun.
