Garden drinks

One of the things I try to do every year when the nights are starting to draw in is make the most of the fact that the evenings are still relatively mild and enjoy a drink outside on the balcony. It’s a lovely thing to do, sitting in the fading light and the fresh air, knowing that soon it really will be too cold to pause in the cold night air without having bundled yourself into jackets and jumpers beforehand.

This year I got some drinks in that would both remind me of summer and give me a warmth in my belly when the evenings are starting to get that nip. I’ve got pink champagne, a lovely white wine, and a sake, which I ordered from Amazon. These came from Cunard - click here to see their wine list.

Here’s what I thought of the drinks:

Sake

This was great - it was like whisky but for wimps like me. I liked it, when usually I grump about whisky. Obviously this isn’t whisky, it’s sake, which is a rice wine. It is sweet and light yet still with that charcoal-y taste that you’d enjoy from whisky. And the bottle was incredibly pretty too.

It’s the sort of drink you can have indoors on a mild autumn evening, and feel quite relaxed. I’m a convert.

Pink Champagne

Well, come on, I’m not going to moan about pretty pink Veuve Clicquot champagne, am I? It was lovely. And a wonderful reminder of summer too.

This champagne is top quality: it ages for nearly twice the time of other champagnes, and you can tell from the taste. It made me feel smart and happy, and because it was pink, it made me feel fun, too.

Carmel Ridge White wine

This was lovely and light: very floral.

And when I was drinking it I noticed the leaves of my vine, just starting to change colour, reflected in the wine:

And I breathed a little happy sigh and drank away quietly in the fading light.
