Isn’t this a sweet snowdrop? It looks as though it dipped its outer petals into the green dye it was using for the little moustache it sports on the inner cone. It also has lovely tall stems, making it beautifully visible at this time of year. The key with establishing snowdrops is firstly to accept that sometimes they don’t like being established. Once you’ve got over that, you can also accept that conventional wisdom about ‘planting in the green’ is falling out of fashion for the reasons outlined here. You might want to wait until the late summer to plant some fully-grown bulbs instead. Choose a spot that isn’t going to get waterlogged, and if possible one under a tree or a shrub: it looks pretty and the larger plant will do your work for you in avoiding waterlogging.
