I do struggle to get all the plants for my allotment ready when I live in a small flat with just a balcony. So last year I decided to cheat a little and order a set of vegetable plug plants from Rocket Gardens that I could just plant out, rather than trying to raise everything from seed and running out of windowsill space.

I chose the Nutrient Dense garden, partly because it had such a pretty illustration, but also because I was quite taken with the idea of a selection of vegetables that score highly on nutrients compared to the number of calories they contain (although proper gardeners don’t need to worry about calories as much as couch potatoes do). It contains the following:

Spring Greens x 6
Red Russian Kale x 5
Cavolo Nero x 5
Green Borecole x 5
Spinach x 10
Chard x 10
Peppers x 3
Carrots x 10
Strawberry plants x 3
Tomatoes x 3

And the plants are so pretty when they arrive!

They come with smart instructions on growing:

The plants are also at just the right stage of having good roots that aren’t root bound, although they do need planting out quickly when they arrive (and am I the only person who has just noticed quite how pretty chard roots are?):

I was pleased with these plants, although one of the tomatoes arrived dead. The others, though, flourished:

They have saved me a great deal of labour indoors and have jazzed up my veg patch outdoors. I was particularly impressed that the young carrots were sent at just the right stage that I could plant them out and then harvest straight sweet roots later. A lot of plug plant carrots could have been bifurcated and knobbly from their start outside the ground.

As I’m hopefully moving house right slap-bang in the middle of this year’s seed growing season, I’ll be calling upon the lovely people at Rocket Gardens again.

The article about Rocket Gardens was so interesting. But here
In southwestern Montana in the USA………have no clue what you
    are talking about.

    Happy harvesting.
