HomeblogDrying sage Dry bunches of sage to give to friends and rejuvenate your plant. The sage plant on my patio is huge. Really, it is: It’s actually two sage plants: one purple and one normal, but the normal one has turned into a monster and is engulfing the entire herb bed. It’s time for drastic action. I’ve pruned about a third off this plant and still it looks massive. The pruning won’t hurt it: it will help it keep its shape and encourage new growth. The huge piles of sage stalks aren’t going to go to waste, though. I’m bundling them up and hanging them in the shed to dry. Once dry, I can give them away to friends who don’t have their own monstrous sage bushes, store some, and use the rest to stop the hen coop smelling on hot days. The most important thing about drying herbs is to find somewhere that is dry. You can hang them in bunches as I have done, or with paper bags attached to gather up any leaves the fall and keep the floor tidy. As this is my shed, any pretence at being tidy would be a waste of time. Share this:Share 3 Responses Sheri June 22, 2014 Question: At what time do you harvest your Sage? Your picture above shows that it’s not blooming. Mine is in bloom and I’m trying to decide what to do at this point. Do I let it develop seed and save the seed? The bee’s sure loved the blooms! Grateful for any help! Cheers! Reply F&F June 22, 2014 Hi Sheri, I tend to harvest it before it flowers: the purple sage is flowering but the green isn’t, yet. I like to save the flowers for the bees too! Reply Sheri June 23, 2014 I was checking out the spent blooms this morning and see that it holds a single seed in each bloom. I’m going to go ahead and let it all go to seed then cut and collect the seeds. I think what I’ll do is next year catch it before it blooms and designate some for the bees. Thank you for your reply!
