‘Dalmatian Cream’ foxglove

These foxgloves, called ‘Dalmatian Cream’, are in flower in my garden at the moment. They’re ever so pretty.

In many foxgloves it’s difficult to see the little hairs that line the flower throat, but on these deep magenta-splodged flowers, you can see the dark hairs. They make me chuckle, as they remind me of the downy hair that appears on children’s legs as they start to grow up and before they either start shaving if they’re girls or parading around thinking they’re manly if they’re boys. For foxgloves, they’re just a fact of life. But it’s nice to sneak up on them and catch their little secrets.

I used to be a real purist about foxgloves and think that only native pink Digitalis purpurea would do. I’m still a bit picky: I don’t much like anything garish. But I do like these cream flowers, and others like Elsie Kelsey. I’m sowing more around the garden this weekend as foxgloves really are a plant that works better en masse. And I always sow in situ as these plants are not easy to move, and grow better when scattered with fine sand or soil onto the bed where you want them to grow.
