Loganberries

Loganberries are a tart hybrid plant.

I love loganberries, and have always tried terribly hard to make sure I’m growing one wherever I live. I’ve moved this loganberry down from the allotment to my garden, and it’s just starting to produce fruit. This is the best year we’ve had from this plant: it has dozens of tart berries on it.

Loganberries are a hybrid between a blackberry called ‘Aughinbaugh’ and a raspberry. They grow more like a blackberry, fruiting on year-old canes which need trimming back after fruiting. I’m growing this one against one of the tall wooden walls that terrace my hilly garden. I tend to sprinkle fish, blood and bone on them in the spring, and mulch with well-rotted manure. But other than that, they’re well-behaved berries that jolly well get on with it.
