Verbena bonariensis is a great plant to get a new garden looking good fast. It’s a cliche, I know, but Verbena bonariensis really is a fabulous plant to get a garden looking good in its first year. I got these plants in my bumper order from Gardening Express, and have dotted three big fat clumps of them along the long border in the centre of the garden. Don’t they look magical? This is a flower that really needs planting in bulk so that it has an impact. Its height is incredibly useful in a new border, as it springs up to around five and a half feet without much effort at all. And it self-seeds everywhere, too. Which will be very welcome indeed. Next year I am going to run it the entire length bothsides of a pathway. I can imagine it already. Long live verbena, and if it doesn’t manage to live long, it is a super self seeder and really simple to grow from seed.
