HomeblogFresh heritage tomatoes Two gorgeous, flavoursome heritage tomatoes get the F&F taste test. So after a bit of a moan, my heritage tomatoes are ripening nicely. Here’s ‘Noir’ and ‘Darby Pink-Yellow Striped’, both from Garden Organic’s Heritage Seed Library collection: The ‘Darby Pink-Yellow Striped’ is giving us the best yield at the moment, with big round juicy sweet tomatoes ripening every two days from six big trusses on the plant. They’re perfect for salads or in sandwiches. The ‘Noir’ tomatoes have a lighter flavour and are also lovely sliced horizontally for sandwiches. Not a knockout tomato, but still a lovely blushing pink colour and pretty ribbed fruits. I’ve found these grafted tomatoes vigorous and trouble-free. We’ve been getting a number of alerts over the past few weeks for Smith Periods (a continual run of days where the humid conditions are perfect for tomato blight to flourish, but so far the plants aren’t showing any signs at all. We’ll be cutting the final fruits off in the next couple of weeks anyway, either so that they can ripen inside, or for making green tomato chutney.
