Watering the roof garden

An automatic watering system saves bother on the roof.

I love gardening, but like everyone, I don’t like chores. Chores are things that you have to do that even if you try to make them fun are still a bit of a drag, even though they keep your plants healthy and happy. Watering the roof terrace is one such chore. It involves lugging the watering can from one part of the garden through the house, up the stairs and out onto the roof. It’s just enough bother for it to be tempting not to bother. The problem is that the plants on the roof are often the ones that need watering the most.

So to stop the bother altogether, I’ve installed a clever watering system that does all the hard work for me. It’s a Hozelock watering system from Swell UK, and it means that all I need to do is turn on the tap. In fact, I don’t even need to do that, as this kit comes with a timer that turns it on for me. Simple!

We’ve taken the hose up to the roof terrace, and then added watering arms at points where the pots are gathered on the balcony. The water gently splashes out of the watering arms and gives the pots a thorough watering, while I’m putting my feet up, or at least whizzing round the garden doing other chores.

It was very easy to put this kit together, and I was relieved that the water did travel up the side of our house onto the roof as well. You can cut the watering arms to as long or short as you like, which means the equipment isn’t obtrusive. I had worried that it would make my balcony look messy, but instead I barely notice it. The only criticism I’d have is that it does leak slightly at the join between the main hose and the thinner watering arms, which is a bit of a pain. But other than that, it does make my life so much easier.
