HomeblogThe best passion flower Passiflora alata is a precious, tender, gorgeous flower. Look, is this not the most beautiful passion flower you’ve ever seen? It is Passiflora alata, a wing-stemmed evergreen passion flower from the Amazon. I got it in my passion flower collection from Gardening Express and I’ve had it on the balcony this summer, with its fat shiny buds swelling enticingly in the late summer weeks. When they opened, the flowers were so worth the wait. They are gorgeous, rich, deep scarlet on the inside, but pink and boiled sweet-ish on the outside. And then there’s the crown: A passion flower this precious needs plenty of care. It cannot cope with frosts, and so I’ve put it into my greenhouse now before the temperatures drop too low. Soon I will also wrap it in fleece and there will also be a small heater in the greenhouse to keep things going when we really reach deep winter. But as with all my passionflowers, I’m taking cuttings, just in case something really terrible happens over the winter. Few plants are worth that little bit of extra effort. This one is.
