A juicy and fast-growing F1 hybrid sweetcorn called ‘Lark’ does well in the F&F garden. Our sweetcorn plants have done so well this year. We’ve had the best harvest for a good long time. I got them as plugs from Victoriana Nursery, and the variety is ‘Lark’. Before I planted them, I dug in a good amount of well-rotted horse manure and protected the young plants with crushed garlic so that slugs didn’t destroy them. Then I fed them once a week with comfrey tea or chicken manure tea, depending on what was ready. Sweetcorn likes to let you know when it is ready: the tassels on the cobs turn brown. That’s when it tells you it’s time for you to unwrap the soft leafy layers to protecting it to take a jolly good look. And just to be sure, stick your nail into one of the individual seeds: milky-white liquid running out means the cob is ready to eat. I just plunge mine into boiling water for a few minutes, and I always make sure I eat within half an hour of harvesting as this is when the cob is at its sweetest.
