Winter salads

Peashoots keep F&F’s plates green and leafy during the winter months.

These peashoot planters in my unheated greenhouse have been one of the best things about the garden this winter. They took a long time to get to the size where I could eat them - I sowed them nine weeks ago - but it really is a treat to have fresh, soft, salad leaves from the garden at this time of year.

I also threw in a few sunflower seeds as well as the shoots of a young sunflower plant are delicious.

Ever since I took the 52-week salad challenge a few years ago, I’ve been much better at growing and eating salads all the year round as I discovered so many new leaves I hadn’t come across before. Of course, spring and early summer are wonderful for salad growing (with late summer always a bit stressful as the hot weather can lead to many salads bolting or struggling). But winter isn’t all bad either.
