HomeblogRising rhubarb The rhubarb starts to peek above the soil. One of the signs that the misery of winter is over is those little rhubarb leaves sprouting from the soil, so alien and bright. These are ‘Glaskins Perpetual’ plants that I got from Brookside Nursery as young plug plants last year when I moved in to the Dream Garden. They seem to be settling in pretty well, don’t you think? I also lifted all my rhubarb from the allotment when I gave it up (which I still feel sad about, though it has all fitted perfectly well into the new garden and there is still plenty of space for more, and I can manage it all without worrying that I’m about to be encased in weeds, Sleeping Beauty-style, if I take a weekend off weeding). I separated some of the bigger crowns and have planted them around the garden, which means I now have eight sizeable rhubarb plants as well as the young ones. Some people might think that’s too many, but I’ve never, ever found that I’ve got enough rhubarb as it really is one of my favourite foods in the world. Perhaps I’ll plant some more this year. There’s nothing better for syrup to be drunk as a rhubarb champagne cocktail. Two of my three plants died because I planted them just before unseasonal snow - but I’m holding out for the third!
