At this time of year, my vegetable patch looks a bit like a settlement of different buildings and strange sheets as I try to warm the soil and bring plants on early. There’s a mini polytunnel for salads, black matting covering black plastic to warm the soil for potatoes, and the cold frame for the chard and kale.

Inside that polytunnel or cloche is rainbow chard at one end, and a space for early salads at the other end.

This cloche comes from Plant Me Now, and I’ve also got fleece and net covers for it for different seasons. Right now I want a warm and moist environment, and so the polythene covering is the best.

Next to the salads is a small patch of ‘Marco’ garlic, planted in the autumn.

At this time of year you can greatly extend your planting season by putting protection around plants, and this cloche is one of the ways I can bring salads on in a way I couldn’t for another month or so without protection.
