The Pineberry, or Fragaria x ananassa, is a curious-looking and beautiful-tasting fruit. This is not an April Fool’s Day joke (just as well, given it’s July). This is a real berry. It’s the Pineberry, or Fragaria x ananassa, and I’ve got a small clump of them hiding out in the strawberry beds, looking all innocent most of the year until they produce these fruits and show that they are cuckoos in the nest. This is a typical pineberry fruit next to a normal-sized strawberry from the patch. Both taste pretty fabulous. But they don’t taste alike. The pineberry does have a slightly more exotic taste, which makes it worth growing not just as a novelty but as a delicious delicacy in its own right.
