Acer palmatum ‘Sango-kaku’ has beautiful summer foliage well before its autumn splendour. I planted a coral-bark maple, Acer palmatum ‘Sango-kaku’, for its autumn colour. I love autumn, and few trees can beat the maple for stunning autumn colour. But what I didn’t realise was that the colour festival on this plant starts way before anyone’s even talking about the nights drawing in and crunchy falling leaves. Over the past few weeks, the green red-tipped leaves have been starting to glow a bright orange-paprika colour. They stand out beautifully against the green foliage behind this tree, particularly the dark green glossy-leaved Viburnum davidii that grows low behind it. This tree is from Gardening Express. I’ll be most grateful for this tree in the autumn and winter when other plants have given up grandeur and I need bright foliage and striking bark to get me through. But this late summer colour is a beautifully pleasant surprise.
