HomeAllotmentsHelen’s allotment Helen’s allotment is in York and she has only had it for a year, but has achieved so much in that short time. She started by clearing a border and putting in some spring bulbs and forget-me-nots, so that she’d have something pretty to look at. Then she created a bed where she planted garlic, which she has now harvested. Everything is growing well, despite a huge amount of rubbish in the soil, including two coats, a trainer and enough shards of glass to build an entire greenhouse. The site used to be a dumping ground, which explains the odd finds underground. Now there are onions, strawberries, rhubarb, broad beans, runner beans, climbing beans, mangetout, sugarsnap peas, beetroot, carrots, parsnips, cauliflowers, sprouts, purple-sprouting broccoli, potatoes and some asparagus from seed, which a friend gave her ‘as a joke’. She also has three chickens, who moved to the plot at Easter. ‘I love having an allotment, it’s so peaceful to visit on way home from work,’ Helen says. ‘I just wish I had more time to keep on top of the weeding.’ Well, we’ve loved seeing your allotment, too, Helen.
