Clematis ‘Vienetta’

A late-flowering clematis has a beautiful way of blooming.

Of all the clematis we have amassed in our garden over the past year and a bit, this Clematis ‘Vienetta’ is surely my favourite. It is late-flowering, grows to 8ft, and has purple and white blooms. That much is good. But what is really wonderful about is the different stages of blooming that it goes through.

First the blooms open with a small collection of purple inner petals.

Then those inner petals fluff out a little:

Gradually the larger white petals fall off. And they leave this little purple-lilac-and-white-painted pincushion in the middle:

And that then fades to a papery bloom:

I don’t think I’ve grown a summer plant that ages so gracefully. It even beats the hellebores in spring for growing old beautifully. And given I scooped it up on a mosey around the garden centre, without really knowing much about it, ‘Vienetta’ is my favourite find of this year.
